**Local Army Cadets get Radio Licenses!**
**By: LCpl Vicente, Cadet Correspondent**
Senior cadets from 2918 RCACC completed their Restricted Operator’s Certificate – Maritime (ROC-M) course on October 4th, at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 338 in Harrow. The one-day course was taught by members of the Sun Parlor Amateur Radio Club (SPARC).
2918 Royal Canadian Army Cadets is a free youth program for youth ages 12-18. Cadets were able to attain their training and licenses at no cost, through local non-profit fundraising initiatives.

**Cadet Vicente’s Story:**
“I was able to take part in the course alongside other senior cadets! During the training, we covered marine VHF radios, radio rules and procedures, and how radios can be used during an emergency. In Canada, anyone who operates a marine VHF radio must have an ROC-M certificate.
We also covered Digital Selective Calling (DSC), a feature on many modern marine radios that can send a distress alert during an emergency. I found it interesting to see how marine radios can help people call for help when they need it.
At the end of the day, we completed a written test. We all successfully passed and earned our ROC-M certificates. We also found out that the ROC-M does not expire and is valid for the lifetime of the holder.
Taking part in the course gave me a better understanding of marine radio and how it can help keep people safe on the water. It was also a great opportunity to earn a certificate that we can use in the future.
I would like to thank SPARC for teaching the course and sharing their knowledge with us, and Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 338 for providing the venue. We all enjoyed the experience and are proud to have earned our ROC-M certification.”
2918 RCACC is actively recruiting youth to join our free youth program.
